snoring giant
Can you spot the Snoring Giant of New Britain?

The Snoring Giant

This series of rocks stands at the end of a long ridge on the south side of Route 84, between Exits 36 and 35 in New Britain and sits right above an active rock quarry.  As you can see from the photo, it appears to be the face of a sleeping giant, his mouth open wide while he snores.  The rocks are tremendous, but from a distance, appear very small.  Compare the size of the stones that make up the face to the trees on the ridge to the left and right.  It almost looks like a sleeping Homer Simpson.  You have to be quick to spot this Snoring Giant, however, for there is only a ten- to fifteen-second window of opportunity where he is visible as you drive east along Route 84, and that's only during the late fall and winter months when all the trees are bare.

The Lady in the Tree

The photos below were taken in the Seventh Day Baptist Cemetery, otherwise known as the Green Lady Cemetery in Burlington.  The Lady in the Tree appears in the maple at the northeastern corner of the graveyard.  It is the remnant of a large branch that has broken off near the trunk, but appears as a woman wrapped in a hooded cloak and leaning on a staff.  As far as we know, no one has reported seeing this so far.  For more details on the Green Lady Cemetery in Burlington as well as the history of the Seventh Day Baptist Church and why its members disappeared from the area, click here.

The Skull of the Hanging Hills

Set within the cliff face of the northeastern side of the Hanging Hills in Meriden is this curious rock anomaly.  The cliff is a slate brown color throughout, except for this area where the stone is somewhat bleached.  The area resembles a skull when viewed from a distance.  When GHOST team members first viewed this site, it was right after dusk and was quite dark.  Because of this, the failing light played tricks on our eyes and gave us the impression that there were three caves that made up two eye sockets and a nasal cavity.  When viewed in full daylight, however, it was revealed that there were, in fact, no caves at all, but a small pine on the upper right and two darker brown marks to make up the skull montage.  The night photos are frightening, but when viewed in the day, it's easy to see how anything can become misconstrued in the darkness.
